Very true about the maps being big.
On the other hand, one way or another they have to be pulled (or copied) through the network.
Embedding them in the max files, and activating the maxzip option (max file preferences) would halve (or thereabout, by nature the maps are very repetitive in structure, being lovely a candidate for zipping) the size of max file + maps, making for a net 50% gain in compound filesizes and network traffic.
Overall, embedding wouldn't be bad an idea, then again, there's a need to access the max and VRay sdk to make it happen.
