  • turn off GI on selected lights

Sometimes I want to have GI not calculate for selected lights to save render time and leave it on for my hero lights, this would be great for a scene that has many dozens of lights in the back that don't need complex calculations. Thanks in advance,
    Cheers

Using the light cache for the secondary bounces could help in this case, as the direct lighting is stored by default with the light cache itself, so during the irradiance map/qmc stage the lights are not actually evaluated at all for secondary GI.

      but...

but you can't turn it off on just specific lights and leave it on for others.

I think what vlado means is that you turn on all the light you want GI on and turn it off on the others. Then do the IR map calc, but don't render, and save it to an IRmap. Then turn on the extra lights that you want, and do your GI based on the saved IR map.

that would work, but this is the wishlist section, so I say let's add it to the wishlist. lol

            thanks

            Thank you percydaman for understanding.

I use all the renderers out there for 3dsMax and I find this a great option to have less GI less render times. I know Vray works much different than other renderers out there but this is a fact for any renderer, less GI to calculate fast render times.

Lets say I have 100 light in the back and I have a hero light that is an area and I'm rendering in film res like 2k or 4k. this is when rendering 100 GI lights is a pain and could do with out.

anyways every other renderer has it so why not Vray,
            Cheers

Well, simply because no one has requested it so far Anyways, I've made a note about this so we'll see.

Is it now possible to turn off GI for a selected light?

No - I'm having second thoughts about it. All these cheats become extremely difficult to support properly for all situations (f.e. proper interaction with the multiple importance sampling, GPU code, light selects and other lighting elements etc).

                      Best regards,
