  • Re-introduction of Frozen objects render error

There was an error (I guess it was an error) in older versions of Vray (pre-1.47 I think) that I used to take advantage of a lot: If you froze an object and clicked "Hide Frozen Objects" the geometry, as expected, would not show in the viewport. However the hidden frozen geometry would render as if it wasn't hidden.

This is no longer the case. Hidden frozen objects don't render.

I used this feature often to improve graphics performance. Now I have to either display as box, or hide the geometry and remember to unhide it at render time.

Is there any workaround to reproduce this error?

You can use the Layer system in max8; add the objects that you wish to hide in the viewport to a separate layer and click the Hide option in Layers manager, but leave the Render option on. This will hide the objects in the viewport, but they will still render.

Thanks Vlado. It sounds good in theory, but I can't seem to get that to work...

With layers you can have a layer visible in the viewport but not render, or you can have a layer hidden and not render. If a layer is hidden, it always will not render, regardless of whether the render option is enabled or not. Unless I'm missing something.

      Cheers

Hmm, on a simple scene here it worked fine... (max.

In the main render dialog under where you set the resolution theres a checkbox called 'render hidden objects'

You'll never guess what it does.

It doesn't work if the objects are hidden because of the "Hide frozen objects" option.

I always thought it did, although I never use freeze.
