I've run into this a couple times, but if you use the camera clipping planes to look through a wall, the toon renders black any objects you've clipped.
This was mentioned in this thread, and you can get around it by modifying the geometry, but when I have a scene with multiple cameras it's a real pain to cut open walls that need to be visible from other angles.
