    It would be very useful to have the ability to project i.e. an HDRI onto a rough reconstruction of a scene to get proper reflection angles. If one projects via an uv map modifier he gets more or less texture distortions caused by the geometry.

    Hi,

    I always put a tesselate modifier on top with tension 0. Then I pump up the settings until the mapping is right.

      Yes, things like this work to some extend, but you will still have some amount of distortions which is especially annoying with clean geometric environments like modern architecture. It would be nice to get rid of vertex based uv's for such cases.
