  • Compound Render Element

I very often need only one or two Render Elements extra rendered, but for a full picture I have to create more and compose them all later. An example:

Often I only need GI and reflection extra. Now instead of having to render every other Element for itself to get a full render I would need a pass "Everything minus GI and Reflection". This would simplify compositing for smaller jobs a lot, since not every job needs a full blown render elements pipeline.

ummmm. i dont get it. you just want to be able to choose 1 or 2 render elements other than rgb? cant this be done in the render elements window? im really confused

Kinda like the "blend" render element with scanline.

      Sounds good to me.

I think what they're after is a final image that's normal except for reflections (for example). This way you could layer in the reflections by rendering out just the one render element (e.g., reflections) and be able to tweak the reflections without having to do a full composite for the other layers. Probably equivalent to turning off all reflections for the beauty pass and then turning them back on and rendering out a reflection render element. Could be useful in some situations I suppose.

            just a quickie:
is it actually possible to render just one pass individually without having to compute the RGB one?

No it isn't. As far as I know this is a limitation of using the 3dsmax render element system. Brazil, for example, has it's own Render Element or Buffer system, where you CAN render them individually (without needing to render the other data).

But surely if you wanted to render the reflective component only, it would effectively need to GI component as well (otherwise what is it reflecting?)? Obviously, I am probably totally wrong

+1 for this request if it's possible. I often do just what dlparisi mentioned with reflections, only now I have to comp a bunch of different pieces to get what I want.

Indeed for some passes that's the case, but for something like a depth or matte pass this isn't' the case.

Just want to revive this thread, because I right now desperately need some sort of compound passes for the job in front of me.
Vlado please implement them, in every second job I need them.
