  • Displacement ideas

Just been thinking of an idea for displacement.
Is it possible to somehow precalc the displacement and save it to a file or bake it into the host mesh? might it be possible with raymarching of some sort?
Or could it be calculated and transferred to a VRayproxy to save on memory at render time?

    anyway its just a thought

You could probably do this already with a subdivide and modifier based displacement - collapse it down to an edit poly then convert to a proxy.

No idea how well it works in practice though.

I just tested this by making a subdivided brick wall... 3m section at 2mil polys. Max hated it, rendered in 40 seconds. Converted to proxy, copied about 20 of them around and while incredibly slow, it did work. And looked quite good, too.

Not something you could use very often though.

It would be cool if the vr displaced surface could be written directly to a vrmesh

Yeah that would be very slick indeed, it would save so many issues with rendering large scenes with dispalcement.
