    posted this in take5 and i guess i should just make it a wish.
    it would be cool to have a check box in vray material that when turned on if the object is transparent it will trace a ray to the edge of the object. pass into it (refracting) then once inside the object it will not concider any more geometry untill it has passed back out of that object. effectively allowing for a sort of rentertime boolean union of two intersecting objects. This would be good for crystals, water droplets and im sure other things

    V-Ray will do that already if a) the objects are refractive (not transparent) and b) they have the same IOR. That would cover the crystals and droplets case.

        Can you explain this a bit more? If I try two objects both with the same refractive material intersecting, I see one passing through the other.

          i just tried. a box and a cylinder passing through the box. it looks as though they are 1 piece

              I still don't get it. Here's how my render looks:

              The one on the right is made up of a box a cylinder and a sphere, the one on the left is made from the same pieces proboolean'd together with union. The material is a simple vray mat: oringe diffuse, orange refract, IOR of 1.6, and affect shadows checked. I can still see the cylinder passing through the box and see the box through the sphere on the right one. Using elf's original post wish, it would seem the look we're going for is more like on the left.

                actually i see what you mean. i tried again and even though you dont see a hard edge on the object passing through it is still having an effect. as though its there

                  It looks like you have some diffuse component to the material, which will still show up. This was originally implemented for clear materials like water or glass, which have full refraction.
