  • material - reflect as non-glossy checkbox

I would love to be able to quickly have a material reflect in other objects without using it's glossy values. There are some exceptions, the main one being if you see the object in something with a crisp reflection. Obviously it needs to look correct.

The main example would be think of maybe a stainless steel cavity. Maybe a dishwasher inside, or under the hood of a car that isn't painted. All those metal parts bouncing around? Wow, render time goes through the roof. If you simply create an override material and place a copy of what you want into reflection and GI calculation removing the glossy effects (and maybe bump map if you are using that to create some more precise glossy values) your rendertime will see a Huge drop. But the images will look nearly the same.

The problem is, that can be hard to keep track of in a team environment, and can be time consuming.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was just a checkbox next to glossy that allowed you to turn off glossy values for reflections, refractions, and GI. Yes, they could be 3 different values to meet the many different needs of all the vray users.

A different option would be to still use glossy values maybe but allow you to specify how many samples were used in reflections? I haven't tested that though, so not sure how much that would effect the render time.

This really does reduce time by an astounding amount. One rendering we did took about 20 hours, but when we change the two main materials to overrides it was reduced to about 2 hours. Obviously this is related to the scene, how much memory it takes, number of processes, etc. But still, it's definitely significant.
