  • Memory management

Correct if I'm wrong. When max loads a model it has all model information like vertices, mappings, materials, textures and so on in the system memory. When VRay starts rendering it creates it's own optimized structure of the model to the memory for faster rendering. I can see in the task manager that when vray starts rendering the memory usage jumps to almost double. I quess this is the case in max renderer too. So the model is actually twice in the memory?

If this is a case would it be possible to make a standalone renderer of VRay so it would be more memory efficient to render for example in networks that don't have machines with big memory capacities?

The problem is of course other max plug-ins that won't work in this kind of system but maybe only half of the renderings here need 3rd party plug-ins like Dreamscape and the other half would work fine with the standalone VRay version only?

They are working on a kick *ss standalone renderer that can render with insane amounts of geometry. Look in the image gallery, furry dino for an example
