I can't help feeling nostalgic about the olden times of Vray 1.5, when it was still possible to get a silky smooth BF render to complete in a reasonable amount of time. After months of trying unsuccessfully to obtain a noise-free BF image in 2.1, I wonder if we could, in the next update, have a simple legacy option in the AA settings, allowing one to use either the new or the old DMC sampler. Would that be doable?

I bought it and have been experimenting with it. I definitely need to learn about about how it works, right now it is giving me pretty good quality results, using high settings, but extremely long render times - longer than I've ever had before. The lower quality settings are just not acceptable for production. Will put a bit more effort into it though. It looks like it could be useful for animations.
EDIT: Also, all the BF presets are noisy and very slow, at least in the scene I'm working on at the moment.Check my blog

Im still happy with Solid Rocks!
DonĀ“t know what reasonable times are for you guys.
Ive rendered this image with SR - Universal Settings - Very good settings.
2500px in 4hours (two computers).
This was the heaviest view. Other views took around 2 and 3 hours - all Universal Settings too.
Here is the result. I think itĀ“s pretty free of noise, no?

those rendertimes are acceptable for stills but a bit problematic for animation.. in my opinion solidrocks does have uses as quick way to control vray but in my experience its not comparable to someone who knows vray manually setting it up. the rendertimes are never as fast. and it does put very strange settings in there.. its hard to tweak afterwards, since it uses such odd values for everything.

exteriors are also less problematic though, especially if you don't really see through windows inside buildings, I guess universal settings can perform well in those cases. I think interiors or scenes where there's a lot of bouncing of indirect light, and very little direct one, are the real problem here..

asa rivoli says, exteriors are usually faster with brute force. interiors are the problem. i just finished a masterplan scene with brute force lighting.. it was clean and rendered in about 16 mins at 1280x720 (masterplan aerial shots are always the fastest to render mind you..)

Solid is ok for exteriors, but for interiors and problematic light setups its not really usable for me, especially if the light has to travel long distanceMartin

I'm very reluctant to add yet another option; if you can get me some scenes where you see a difference between the old and the new samplers, please send them to me at vlado@chaosgroup.com so that we can fix the issue rather than hack around it.
Best regards,
VladoI only act like I know everything, Rogers.
