  • Volume Solids (similar to Cebas' fR-VolumeSolid)

From time to time I wish there was a similar feature in Vray.

Just imagine what you could do with such technique together with Bercon Noise

Well, for some of these effects you can just use regular displacement. For a true volumetric effect, PhoenixFD can do it in surface mode.

Can you post an example scene?

Yes, is there a tutorial for this somewhere perhaps?
I love Vray and all, but the good thing about fRs VolumeSolids for this particular task I'm experimenting with is that I can get true feedback directly from viewport concerning the bounding volume of the object (minus the subtraction that takes place at rendering.) For example, if I'm going to do a match move of a live action reference object it's always good to see the 3d geometry in the viewport for estimation.

Can Phoenix FD together with Vray do, let's say, fill an animated sphere, and have maps such as BerconNoise affect the Phoenix surface and follow the transform of the sphere?

whats the difference between that and displacement?

Simple displacement, or even vector displacement, won't allow you to use a three-dimensional texture (a mapping called Object/World XYZ) to cut out pieces of the volume.
Imagine like you would take bites out of a shape using a texture, that's what Volume solids can do. Displacement is more like poking vertices along their normals to produce a result.

Here is a VolumeSolid material applied to a sphere for example.

Basically it's like Dieter's VRayIso rather than displacement.

That's one plugin I didn't know about until now. But the developers blog seem to be way outdated unfortunately?

Has it been recompiled for max2012 by someone else perhaps?

I merely posted it to point out the differences. See

Hm, Bercon Metaballs also does something similar and is available here: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/misc/

                    Best regards,
