  • GPU accelerated final rendering

this has probably been discussed before (probably a lot) but after some searching I could not find a thread specifically on this topic. Is there some way to use GPU's to speed up rendering, or to render entirely using GPU's for final output? I would have to guess no at this point since RT gpu does not yet support all of vray's features and max's shaders. Is that something we could see in Vray down the road: final, full-featured, high-res rendering on gpu's?

A mix between CPU and GPU rendering usually does not work well (we know because we tried that) - it would only get you a speed up of about 2x and neither the CPU nor the GPU will be utilized fully. So instead we chose to develop the CPU and GPU RT engines separately. I'm pretty sure that with time the GPU renderer will get very close to the capabilities of the V-Ray production renderer. For example, for the next service pack, we will have motion blur, complex texture trees, and full-resolution textures (i.e. no downsampling) and some additional materials; combined with the existing features that means you can actually use the GPU renderer for final images.

    Best regards,

that sounds great Vlado, looking forward to the day when final output can be done on gpu's. The idea of replacing a small render farm with a few high-end graphics cards is very exciting. Keep up the good work.

That sounds great Vlado! Looking forward to this next SP.
