Is it part of Nvidia's strategy to keep things closed? I think they have a lot of influence on development of Nitrous since it needs to support all things Mental Ray.
My guess is that the goal of Autodesk is to first and foremost support what comes bundled with 3ds Max itself. The Nitrous API is still flaky and in development, so I can see why they might prefer to keep it closed for the moment. Opening it up for 3rd party developers might compromise the stability of 3ds Max, which at this point they may choose to avoid. I don't think this has anything to do with nVidia at all. The Nitrous and OGS systems are developed entirely by Autodesk from what I understand.
