  • Vray - Relief Mapping

While it can be used in Vray, it seems to be actually slower than displacement. Weirdly in scanline it is pretty fast.

The effect is so great, I'd love to see a better implementation in Vray.

    What do you think?

Under the hood it is very similar to the 2D displacement mode of V-Ray; they both do the same thing internally (tracing rays through a height-field texture). What slows it down in V-Ray compared to the scanline renderer are the additional rays for AA in V-Ray, which cause the relief texture to be called more often.

      Ok, thank you for explaining.

So would it help to turn off filtering or something like that to speed it up?

While displacement rocks, I still could imagine using it in blendmaterials for various purposes ...
