  • VRayStereoscopic to real Cameras?

I'm using VRayStereoscopic helper for a 10 minute long stereo production. I find that it's really quick and versatile when dealing with scenes with 20+ physical cameras.

I do have one question/feature request though.

When I enable the VrayStereoscopic helper and then click on any of my VrayPhysicalCameras I can visually see the 2 'virtual' left/right cameras that the stereoscopic camera is creating.
Is there a way to generate 2 actual cameras from these 2 'virtual' cameras? With 2 'real' cameras in the scene, i would then be able to send them to After Effects for further stereo3D compositing.

I hope I have explained myself properly!

There is a Vray Stereo Rig exactly for this purpose, although you have to do a bit more manual work, but does allow customisations.

I've tried out the stereo rig for a bit. I thought that rig would connect 2 already pre-existing cameras together (from a matchmove or motion capture, etc). But i want to know how to get 2 actual cameras from the stereoscopic helper's 'virtual' ones.

There is no easy way to do that unfortunately. We can perhaps add a button that would extract the virtual cameras as a VRayStereoRig system.

        Best regards,

Thanks for your response Vlado! If something like that is possible, it would make the stereo3D workflow more complete! would be extremely useful.

At the moment my idea for a workaround is to duplicate the original physicalCamera 2 times and then match the camera targets to the focus distance, then move the cameras 1/2 of the eye difference to the left or right. But it takes ages to set up for each camera!

Vlado would adding that function to the VrayStereoscopic helper really be possible? If something like that was implemented, extracting the virtual cameras to a VRayStereoRig it would be an extreme timesaver for the job I am working on!

              Hi again,

Sorry to be bringing this topic back from the dead!
I am still working away on a Stereoscopic production using the VrayStereoscopicHelper. The project has been expanded and the deadline extended.
I realise that Implementing a few new features is very time consuming - I just wanted to ask for one bit of advice!

At the moment, I am rendering about 90 different Vray Cameras. I keyframed the stereo eye/focus distance for each camera.
The renders look fine, but I want to bring the left and right Vray Cameras into after effects to do further compositing.
My current method is the one that was mentioned earlier in this thread: I clone the center camera twice, then translate and rotate the cloned cameras until they are as CLOSE as possible to the left and right eye virtual cameras. Very hard!

I'm wondering if there is any way at all to speed this process up, or make it more accurate? I've attached a picture of the top viewport in Max. Is it possible to reveal the co-ordinates of the 2 left/right virtual cameras (one circled in red), or even allow me to snap or align the cloned cameras to those locations?
