  • Points and curves

Vlado- this is more of a question than a request but do you have both point and curves as render primitives in place and if so is there a good way we can get to them?

    Thanks!

A spline can be rendered in max if you enable its "Enable in Renderer" option.
What exactly do you want to achieve?

Sure... I dont think that was the point no pun intended. I'm just looking to see if there had been any talk of mimicking the Renderman functionality of point and curve primitives so that 3rd parties could take advantage of these lightweight render types. data expansion is a good thing at render time vs having it in the view port. if you've seen Pixars brave you know that all the foliage was curves grown at render time over the terrain.

Some examples of the use of point primitives

A good way to get these is to get V-Ray for Maya It supports native rendering of both points and curves.

Can't wait to have curve rendering in max for hairs!

I assume that this will eventually make its way over to max?

            Thanks!

The spline rendering for hair - yes, for sure. Point rendering I'm not quite certain where to fit it; perhaps it can be done as a mode for rendering Particle Flow.

The particles as points: would that be a like a tiny Krakatoa, but fully integrated into the shading of vray?

Well, Krakatoa is really powerful in that regard; our implementation is certainly useful, but nowhere near as mighty. I think Phoenix should be able to handle this better.

Id love to see it as a helper or something outside particle PF. That way we could input a data set and get it rendered sans the overhead of PF.

Have you looked at the latest nightlies of Phoenix FD? I'm told that they should include a PRT loader that you can render as an atmospheric effect, though I haven't played with it myself.
