  • "Sync Exposure" Check Box idea.

    I am used to real world photographic f-numbers and shutter speeds (i.e. f/2.0, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11 etc and Shutter Speeds 1/125, 250, 500 etc etc etc).

    But our wonderful software allows us to literally use any numbers.

    When I start a new project and am setting up my VRay Camera and exposure, once that's correct for my visual, that part of things is 'done'.

    However, later, in the visual creation process, I might then want to change my aperture and shutter speed WITHOUT affecting the exposure (for things like Depth of Field for example).

    In the VRayCamera modify panel, to do this, I have to start calculating in my head what the corresponding exposure setting would be (which is okay for say 1 or 2 stops of light, but when there might be 8 stops for example, it is easy to make a mistake and ruin the exposure and waste time).

    So my suggestion is;

    A checkbox in the camera modify panel, calling it something like "Sync Exposure".

    This would be set to 'unchecked by default/new camera etc but which can be checked to 'sync' changes in either Shutter Speed or Aperture AUTOMATICALLY.

    Example,

    You are happy with your exposure at 1/50th at f/8.

    Later on, you decide to have some Depth of field, or maybe for Lens Effects, so you want to have a small aperture like f/22 - you therefore check the 'Sync Exposure' checkbox (because you are happy with your lighting) and go about changing the Aperture, safe in the knowledge that as you do, the Shutter Speed will be altered automatically and the exposure will remain the same.

    If you use the exposure control in the environment tab can you use the depth of field controls in the vray/camera tab?

    It's a much better way of doing depth of field, you check 'get focus from camera' and adjust the amount with the aperture control. Any time i've had to do DOF with a shot that was set up with the physical camera i've ended up deleting it and changed the intensity of all the lights in the scene to look the same with no exposure.

      Just use this script http://www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/sc...camera-manager

      It allows you to change parameters and keep the exposure the same. For example, you lock the ISO and change the F-number (for DOF) and it will automatically change the shutter speed to keep the same exposure.

      Also native Vray method would be great

        Not sure what you mean Neil, but I'm aiming for making the camera controls be 'real world' in behaviour and almost semi-automatic.

          Thanks Alex,

          That script would be great, though it's a bit buggy.
