  • Vray RT in material editor

I'm sure this has been asked or suggested before (I did a search but couldn't find it), but would it be possible to use RT for the sample slots in the material editor?

Since it could be CPU intense to do it for all slots continously perhaps when you click on it, or when you enlarge it?

You mean to progressively refine the swatches? Or something else? Right now, the regular V-Ray will be used to render the swatches and it does a good job out of it - I don't immediately see an advantage of using the RT there.

Yes, that was my thinking. Today it takes a while if you pop it out and have a look at a larger swatch, and I was thinking that with RT continous tweaking would be more interactive. It could perhaps also allow a more complicated swatch, like those we see for materials at vraymaterials.de for example?

It may be possible, I have to think more about it, although there's ton of other stuff before I can look into it.

I think that not neccassarily RT but rather the progressive renderer should be an option to use in the matedit slots. Sometimes I work with large amounts of subdivs across submatrerials in a blendmaterial and I would love to have a more instant althrough lowres/jaggy preview of what I'm doing rather than having to wait 10 seconds and then get the final preview.

To be totally honest the standard sphere and performance/settings for material preview in max is absolute garbage. I tried loading a custom object but for some reason the performance was horrible even though it was a simple gray shader...

Yes, I kind of equal Vray-RT CPU and the progressive render for all practical purposes and seldom tend to use RT. I use progressive in a region view a lot though when working on materials, and sometimes I even load one of them material sample scenes when I want to make sure all conditions are equal. It would be a huge time saver if I could do that in the material editor instead.
