  • Make Vray dirt workin bump

    Hi there,

I'm using a vray dirt Mtl to do scratches on edges and it's not working in the bump but I can see it working when I apply it in the diffuse.

Is it a know limitation? Should work in the bump, would be really usefull.

I can make it work in the bump slot, but there is an ambiguity that I'm not sure what to do about. What should be the result at the intersection of surfaces?

id imagine it should be as you have shown it with the blue arrow. shouldnt this should give us the mythical MR "round edges on intersections" effect?

Only for concave edges. Yes, it does give rounded corners, but calculated in a different way.

I know the "rounded corners" thing has been asked many time (including by me), and I still hope this can someday happen.

Maybe the VRayDirt map needs an overhaul to include a proper bump functionality. As it is now, you can either create dirt on concave edges OR on convex edges (by checking "invert normals"), but not both. How about combining these two functions by the map actually having a gradient, reaching from +180 (concave) to -180 (convex)? When the map is used in "bump mode", the value of the gradient at any given edge-angle defines the normal.

i believe the "rounded corners" thing is being dealt with. i think youll find Chaos have recently licensed the tech from Nvidia (mental ray)

isn't EdgesTex enough for rounded corners?

in MR the "rounded corners" thing works when you intersect seperate objects (i.e where there isnt a poly edge) this is very useful.

Yeah, the round corner ( working with different object intersecting and also blend with other Mtl like in Mr is a must to have feature.. ) but I was talking about the vray dirt not working on the bump. I think it should do the bump like it's doing , let's say with the color( in my case I use the vray dirt to blend Mtl (and that it works ) but when blending textures maps via the Vray dirt, then no bump) . so if it's darker it's geting in and if it's litghter it's getting out. It's hard to explain in word for me.. on skype would be easier to show and explain.

Right now the dirt just blends between the bump mapping of the two sub-textures, but it doesn't warp the normal just based on the occlusion itself. I can do that, but I need to know from you what the normal should look like right at the corner. You can just post a diagram of what you want.

                    Vlado

Ok, if I understand your graphic correctly, I would say something like this . ( and I put 2 images so it may be clearer ) .

                      Is it possible?

I just tried using vraydirt in the bump slot and ran into this problem. It was for a rounded screw head that I want scratches on, but want to have a different mapping on the inside of the screw so the scratches don't match on the outside and inside. Was hoping I could use vraydirt for that but I guess it's not working.

It will very soon. But rounded corners are better for this for sure.
