  • Volumetrics wishlist

    Hi,

We're using V-Ray for VFX, and at least a half of what we render is volumetrics, with V-Ray or Krakatoa. Here's our wishlist of things that would make V-Ray a great volumetrics renderer:

    - mesh to volume conversion tool
    - volumeGrid support for Stoke objects. It gives us great tools to shade and manipulate fields that we are not getting anywhere else in Max.
    - render elements and multimatte support for volumegrid
    - manipulate volume density with textures and object/surface distance
    - rendertime isosurfacing of volumes

I could elaborate on these when necessary.

    Thanks!

P.S.: Please remove my other volumegrid wishlist topic, I'll collect all volumetrics wishlist items here.

Thanks for the suggestions! We will work on the multimatte/render elements support when in volumetric mode. I'm not sure what you mean by the isosurface comment though - you can actually render isosurfaces from volumes even now using the "Isosurface" mode or the "Mesh" mode of the VRayVolumeGrid.

Svetlin will comment on the rest, I guess.

    Best regards,

Yes, the volumegrid mesh mode is taking care of the isosurfacing, check that done Thanks for looking into these.

        Hey Hristo,

Just some notes on the different points to make sure we are on the same page:

        - mesh to volume conversion tool
        [This would happen at rendertime]

        - volumeGrid support for Stoke objects. It gives us great tools to shade and manipulate fields that we are not getting anywhere else in Max.
[We have a fix for loading the proper frame in Stoke and Krakatoa in the dark builds leading up to the coming Phoenix 3.0 release - you'll be able to check there if anything else needs changing or fixing. Do you have any other specific issues with Stoke that don't look like loading the wrong frame?]

        - manipulate volume density with textures and object/surface distance
[Currently you could plug a texmap as the opacity or as a multiplier for the opacity and you could use a V-Ray distance tex there. Does that do the trick?]

        Cheers!

Thanks Svetlin, we did clear it up over chat. Let me know if I can help with anything.
