  • Stand Alone Denoiser handle Bloom and Glare

I just wanted to move this request in the proper forum. Could you please add functionality to the Stand Alone Denoiser to include Bloom and Glare. This would help in denoising animation image sequences with lens effects.

It's great that the VFB does this now for still images...if the SA could do it, animations could be included...thanks.

    Vlado,
Any consideration yet on this one? TIA

Well, it's not impossible but then you'd need some way to specify the parameters and ideally preview them before running the denoiser. It would effectively turn the denoiser into a post-processing application. Which is possible, I just don't know how much resources we can dedicate to it.

Alternatively, we could just write the bloom/glare parameters into the .vrimg/OpenEXR file and the denoiser would apply them as-is without the possibility of adjustment. Would this work for you?

      Best regards,
      Vlado

Yeah, that would work. I think that's how I work with the VFB now when setting up a sequence, especially since the bloom and glare works with the denoised pass since beta 3.5.2...I get the bloom and glare the way I like it, then render the sequence...I wouldn't need to adjust anymore, just denoise the sequence in the stand alone utilizing the frame blend which is a great feature for taking out noise for animation.

I think I see how my request might have been misleading. I wasn't asking that stand alone denoiser do bloom and glare, I was just asking that it include that effect in the denoised result.

Right now, if you render with the bloom and glare passes in an exr, the stand alone denoised won't include those passes, so your end result won't have the bloom and glare...I'm just asking that the stand alone include those.

Let me know if I'm still not clear.

I got it. Will see what can be done about it. But it will take a bit of time.

            Best regards,

              No worries.

It was really cool that the VFB included the effect in the denoised result in 3.05.02. I tried to denoise a sequence with single frame VFB approach, but I got flicker...that stand alone denoiser is gold to animators. I kid you not, I can render with noise set at 0.1 and LC set at 500, and run through the stand alone denoiser set at default with 1 frame blend, and the result looks fanstastic (for animations at least). Render time is good, and the denoiser is fast with the Backburner network approach. All this is set to RT CUDA. Here is a still rendered (1280x720) with this approach which took 4:12 (m:ss) on one maching with 2x 980 ti's OC'd a bit.

(image compression killed the clarity a bit)

Credit goes to Grant Warwick...those are his techniques. I was really challenged by photoreal and understanding vray, until I took his course in Sept 2016. I spent a month going thru the mastering vray and lighting courses, and those really helped me figure out what settings to do in the materials and render setup, as well as how to setup lighting, etc.

Shoot, after I upgraded to vray 3 from 1.5 in July 2016, you guys made it really easy...I didn't have to mess with all the sampling stuff he taught (eventhough learning it helped me understand what vray is doing). All I do, is mess with the noise a bit, set the LC to 500 and run everything through the denoiser. That image even looks better with bloom and glare (hint, hint).

He also introduced the whole GPU thing with octane and vray. That helped me experiment with RT, and it's been fun getting that going. I really think that is the future, if one can build it for their needs. I think the above project is benefiting quite well. I'll try to post an animated clip, once I get that completed.

I'd even go on to highly recommend anyone wanting to learn vray, go thru and learn all the sampling stuff in Grants course. I can't tell how much it has helped me figure out how to diagnose and fix render issues. It's just made me a much better animator.

I really couldn't find any other tutorial as good. I tried Chris Nichols tuts from back in mid 2000, and they were good, but nothing how Grant teaches.

I even have my twin boys learning his hard surface course as a high school class art course requirement.

                        Hey Vlado,

I just wanted to check in on this? I'd love to be able to include Bloom and Glare in my animations, and have the Stand Alone Denoiser include that in the denoised result. Is there any progress? TIA

                            Hi Vlado,
Just checking in again to see if there is any eta on including the bloom and glare in the stand alone denoiser. Just a quick clarify, what you said below is all I'm looking for.
