why not make it possible to convert any object to a VRay Light (while keeping the initial geometry, of course).
That is a very good ideea, I miss this in the project what i am working on.

That's what the light material is for. Geometrically shaped VRay lights can use optimized sampling because of their simple shapes, when the geometry is arbitrary the same kind of optimized sampling will not work.

That said, a few more shapes in the VRay light couldn't hurt. I'm thinking Torus (ring-flash anyone?), cylinder and disc. Simple shapes like that should be possible to implement.

It would be nice to see some tests and to see the difference between a vraylight on ceiling and a vray light mat on the shape of that ceiling! Anybody got some_

yeah just did this little test...
the vray material light needs more samples to look ok as an hdri would..

                vray light.

Hehe, my fault, using 1.09 here...

Concerning Natty's test renders (thanks for that), I believe those images speak by themselves. The VRay light's falloff is much smoother and the teapot shadow is more precise with it. Plus the shape used in the test cannot be simpler. How would a "complex" geometry emmiter behave? And what about the controls? Are they the same as for the VRay lights?

But hey, it's already great to have the light material, and IMO just adding some more shapes to VRay lights (including lines for making a neon light or even the thin wire inside a bulb) would suffice.

                      Regards,

                      Nenad

To expand the test, how about rendering both with direct computation? And also one with store with irradiance map checked for the VRay light.

You need 1.45 for this test. 1.09 doesn't have the VRay light material.
