Currently I am working on an animation where I need to show the assembly steps of a product. All the parts fly into frame and get assembled one after another. The problem is: The objects "waiting" outside of the frame are casting shadows on the background and the other objects that are in the frame, which of course I don't want.
My current workflow is using the VRayOverrideMtl to use a material with an animated opacity in the "Shadow mtl" slot, to have their shadows fade in as the objects enter the frame. This of course requires each object to get its own Override material. It would be much better to have a "Shadow contribution" spinner in the V- RayProperties, to allow a simple thing like this to be animated per-object. Bonus points if self-shadowing of the object can be excluded from this option.
