  • New Feature Request - Multiple Displacement Map Node "VRayMultiDisp"

    (UPDATE)

This problem has been addressed here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkmHBC-Y4YQ

    (/UPDATE)

    Hello Chaos Group,

I would like to suggest the idea of adding a new feature to V-Ray Render Engine.

I propose a single node that accepts Multiple inputs from Displacement Map Data and allows for individual strength controls and Mask Slots.

    An example of a complex Displacement map network;

Layer 1 = Displacement from ZBrush/Mudbox (Sculpted Displacement)
Layer 2 = Texturing XYZ, Red Channel Displacement
Layer 3 = Texturing XYZ, Blue Channel Displacement
Layer 4 = Texturing XYZ, Green Channel Displacement
    Layer 5 = Procedural

Each layer would have an amount value and a Mask.

The user just plugs Displacement map data into the "VRayMultiDisp" node, adjusting the amount in IPR rendering mode for look dev.

For reference, please see the Texturing XYZ, non destructive displacement map workflow here https://texturing.xyz/pages/surface-displacement-maps
Please also see the tutorial on combining multiple displacement maps in Maya with Arnold render engine https://texturing.xyz/pages/non-dest...turingxyz-maps

To implement such a node will make this process less mysterious, easy to use and practically effective.

Thank you for reading my suggestion and Kind Regards.

Am I missing something here or are you basically looking for the "composite" map in 3ds max?
    Software:
    Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
    3ds Max 2016 SP4
    V-Ray Adv 3.60.04

    Hardware:
    Intel Core i7-4930K @ 3.40 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 (4096MB RAM)
    64GB RAM

    DxDiag

      Hi Art48

I'm asking for a dedicated composite map that is specifically designed to combine multiple displacement map inputs and has amount controls and mask slots.

you can see the response from svetlozar.drag (Chaos Support) over here

So what would the difference be compared to using a Composite map? The only advantage that I can see is the (potential) ability to easier do height blending rather than just blending color values. It's still possible to do right now with the height map as a mask and some contrast / brightness editing, but I admit that it would be easier (and more intuitive) with a specific node for it. Although there are other areas that I think Chaosgroup should prioritize before this.

Thanks for your answer - I should focus on how to combine multiple maps using the tools avalible

im trying to learn how to combine displacement maps as in the texturing xyz tutorial

I'm not sure what there is to learn. I mean, Composite map is just like Photoshop layers, so put your displacements there, change the blending modes to Add, and that's it. The right slot is the mask, if you need. It would only make sense to have multiple displace modifiers if instead of simply adding heights, top layers to displace based on already displaced normals. Like a base displace rise a mountain, and the top carve a cave into it. Much like a vector displacement.

              Thanks for your reply Eugenio,
Im going to try all of this out.

and just to clarify, I am after 1 displacement modifier that is being fed a composet of many displacement maps.

Thanks so much for your suggestions - I will test them.

Also Im really sorry but I am quite stupid. I have to ask the stupidest questions to get help and to wrap my head around concepts. Sorry if I'm annoying on these forums.
