  • Helping moving from 3dsmax to Blender

I was jus thinking to what Chaos can offer to people that would like to make the switch from 3dsmax to Blender, considering Vray as base for rendering.
Is it safe to think that if I have a scene made with 3dsmax, exported from there in vrayscene file format, I can import it with no issue?
If yes, it's possible then to convert the imported vrayscene in real Blender meshes to do, eventually, modifications?

    What's planned about this?

    Thanks in advance

The importer in V-Ray for Cinema 4D can import data from a vrscene file to a native cinema 4D objects from pretty much any integration, and it works well most of the time, especially with meshes, materials, lights and camera. It does still have some limitations, but based on the user feedback it works quite well. It took a lot of time to implement this, and it's important to note that it's not a trivial task at all. We will certainly do something like this in Blender as well but wouldn't happen as fast as you would like or maybe expect to. As soon as we stabilise V-Ray for Blender and we stop doing changes to the current data model, we will think about some kind of importer or convertor.
We also need to evaluate if something like USD might not be a better way to transfer scenes in the future.

Anyway, we will keep everybody updated no matter which choice we decide to go with, but there will be some sort of importer or convertor in the future for sure and it is in our to-do list.

      Nice to hear.
I hope you'll find the time to develop it.

In my opinion, for everyone that want to switch to Blender from 3dsmax, it could be a really helpful tool.
