In previous versions of Vray/Blender I used the sun as direct light (to keep things simple).
Since the 2.56 build the direct light sunlight doesn't cast ray traced shadows.
To test this render the attached file in 2.5 33424 and then 2.56.
(image shows same file, 2.5 render left, 2.56 right)
PS playing around with the position of the sun and beam radius helps somewhat, but I have no control.
