You could create a gradient texture map to load in your environment channel. However as bdancer said, the generated texture isn't ready, nor are vertical rotation of the environment channel, nor blending of environment channel layers; two things I'm looking forward to as well.

Really mapped planes, straight or curved, is the best option to create environments (sometimes with emitting material).
But the gradient is easy and fast in blender.
