Last time I had a grass in scene it was set up as proxy particles on multiple emmitters: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=507&p=3243&hilit=grass&sid=36b a5705dcfc2b86ef9e451239c49402#p3243

It was set up on +- 2.56.
