  • IES shadow problem

    Hello
Can someone tell me why IES lights don't cast soft edged shadows like in max, where is the problem is it in Blender, in the exporter or in VRay because I have the opportunity to fix this or at least try.

    Re: IES shadow problem

First check if "Soft shadow" is enabled.
You could scale the light - it'll blur the shadow more.
I'll add additional shape controls in next git commit.

      Re: IES shadow problem

Thank you for the quick answer, soft shadows are on, and scaling them only messes things up, intensity values have to be changed and it either makes no difference (if it is scaled a little bit) or it completely blurs the shadows to the point where they are almost invisible (see attachment), in max shadows come with slight falloff (blurred) by default.
But nevermind my question was where exactly is the prblem:
      Blender ?
      Exporter ?
      VRay ?
      Thank you again

The problem is that there is no problem.
Left: soft shadows = on, right = off

Anyway I add some contols for ies shape, update exporter and you will find "Define shape" params, setting for example width to 0.5 will blur the shadow.

Maybe you don't understand me :P Here is a scene made in max and lit only by IES lights, notice the shadows, I can't achieve that in blender

            I guess I understand you =)
Check my previous post with screenshot and info about updating exporter and using "Define shape" param.
            Here are some more renders:

              Re: IES shadow problem

Yep I can see the difference between the soft shadow on and off, but if you see the picture I showed you before the shadows are not that strong (black) and have a much greater falloff/softness/blur/. But I hope that will be fixed with the "define shape" option, like the radius on the point lights, right?
btw when is the update coming up ?
btw2 :P I am not sure but are the subdivs on the IES lights working ?
              10x for all the effort

No, it just affect the shadow blur; radius on the point light translates the lamp (?mni) to VRaySphereLight.
To just blur the point light shadow you should use "Shadow radius" parameter.

I am not sure but are the subdivs on the IES lights working ?
                Thanks! Fixed.

                Its already there.

if you see the picture I showed you before the shadows are not that strong
You just comparing too different scene. You have a scene with lost of lights and bright walls in max and pretty dark colored scene with 2 ies with low intensity in blender.

                  Re: IES shadow problem

Don't want to open another thread but here is a different problem, which is concerned with glossiness of reflection and refraction, when they are set to 1 or bellow 0.9 it is all ok but when between 0.9 and 1 when reflecting or refracting a even surface like walls and that kind of stuff it makes the reflections or refractions in a big shaped n-gons, and it is not a subdivision problem, here is an example:
                  Thanks again

I believe you are using light cache for reflection glossy rays, right?
