  • Huge delay to render (Export/Import process)

    Hello there.
I have a heavy scene here (6k faces+) and It's very annoying that there's a huge 5min+ delay to start the rendering process, considering that I'm still balancing the lights and stuff, this represents more than the rendering process itself.
I plan to use V-ray for even heavier scenes, Is there a way to make it faster? I know it's an exporter, and the importing process also takes much time, and this is V-ray stuff, but I wonder if there's a way to "integrate" V-ray in Blender like 3ds Max (0 delay).

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
1- make sure you use andreys custom blender build
2- make sure instances are turned on
3-If you like you can use manual mesh export, turn off auto export meshes. This way you can export meshes only when you choose and when rendering it only exports lights/etc and uses the previously exported meshes.

Do you mean 6 million faces? because 6k faces is hardly anything.

Sometimes the building of acceleration tree thing inside Vray can take some minutes before you will see any picture.

      Thank you for your reply.

I'm already using the custom build.
      Instances really helped a little.
I'm checking the manual export, can I select to export only some meshes? (the modified / new ones)

      Yes, 6 million .

I don't think there is 'export only the modified / new ones' currently. There was discussion but don't know it implemented.
Luxrender has this feature and it's pretty solid, maybe you/we can bribe Andrey to implement this??

Good ole Luxrender, I remember the last image I rendered with it. Took a week and I had to remove fireflies manually .
What I'd really like is a plugin like the other programs, not an exporter, but I don't know if it's possible, if it is however, we could even make a crowdfunding or something...
Exporters really sucks, even if you're using instances V-ray itself takes a lot of time to "build raycast accelerator" or something like that.
By the way, what's the difference between instances and proxies? Should I use proxies instead?

Yes, when the number of polygons goes high, I prefer to use proxies, so Blender has not to export the meshes (only a simple refer). I don't know if instances are exported as one or if the exporter exports every instance as a single mesh, however this process takes more time than proxy method.

Instance mesh are only exported once per mesh. Plain instances are not hugely memory efficient.
Proxy is more memory efficient (by LOTS), slightly slower to render (not really noticeable).
Proxy can just be harder to work with.

Hmmm. I think I got it. Instances for chairs, lamps, furniture. Proxies for grass, etc. ?

ah, I see there was already noted the advice to use the export manually option.

Regarding proxies, I use proxies for just about everything I can, including furniture, not just plants. It really does speed up the export process significantly because with the proxy, the vrmesh file is already written.
