How did you learn to use V-ray with Blender?

Hello,

This is my first post here. I have been a C4D user for about 5 years and I'm now learning Blender.
I'm also considering buying V-ray standalone but I know that I would need tutorials to learn it and
(I assume) some materials to get started, but I don't see much of either. Is there a reason why
I'm not seeing Blender/V-ray tutorials anywhere? How did you guys learn this?

Fidgety a bit, huh?
The whole know-how of VrayBlender comes with experience in Vray and I recommend to get it from the source.

If you are C4d user you should take a shot at Vray for C4d - http://www.thec4dvault.com/2011/09/04/introducing-vray/
Other thing is your proficiency in Blender but as we all know there are a bunch of tutorials about Blender.

But first of all you need to learn how to use Blender, so you will be able to navigate in Vray parameters.

Hi ibmike and welcome here!

There aren't many up to date tutorials or videos for Blender/V-Ray out there.
The previous mentioned video from CMIVFX is very good and detailed but quite old, it's for the old Blender 2.49 which was a bit confusing to me.

I bought this tutorial which is quite alright, he goes through a lot of settings and describes how things work.
You get some test files, textures and a 3h 42min long video.

A tip if you buy a video from cmivfx... use some video downloader addon for your browser to actually save the video instead of stream it.
It's a 1 gb .ebm video file which is playable in VLC or even better convert it to something more playable, i can't remember what i used to download it though.

To get you started i think the above is the best right now.
I hope there will be more activity here in the future and hopefully more user tutorials.
I'll try do my share but I'm not really there yet to help anyone

Hi,
On one side - yes, you really need to be accustomed to Blender. Then you "just" use your general knowledge of working with V-Ray derived from MAX for example.
With each new build from Andrey I explore all the menus on the right pane as they change growing with features. The great helper are the hints that Andrey usually leaves under interface elements. They tell a lot.
For a newbie, I think Andrey's explanations searchable on this forum will show the way (once some very basic "how to light, create material, render" level is obtained).

Already a Blender user. I just got curious about Vray after testing several some other rendering engines (yafaray, octane, maxwell, etc...). I am not an expert, but Vray got me for its features. Cycles might grow on me, but I am still learning it...
