  • Several addons I had working in normal Blender 2.79 now will not install in Vray Blender 2.79

    Hello,

Yesterday I updated windows 10 and was forced to update Vray blender and Vray standalone because they ceased to work after the update. At first, the updated VRay for Blender would crash on startup but with help from JuhaW I managed to get it to start by deleting my UserPreferences and Startup File (although I had to set these up again from scratch once I got the new VRay Blender working).

I managed to get everything working as before except for some addons which VRay Blender 2.79 will not allow me to enable (first I atleast got some error message like when an addon is obsolete or outdated, but now it just directly crashes blender without giving any error message when I try to enable it).

Among these addons are several ones in development which you may find normal to give problems (although they work 100% fine in normal Blender 2.79), but the Official PIE menus addon? This one crashes and is supposed to be mainstream already for ages. I can live without these addons working but really, why should I when I have them to make my use of blender more complete. I've tried the last three nightlies as of the date and all have the same problem.

It seems to me that for the meantime VRay Blender 2.79 is pretty unstable and I hope in the near future I will be able to use these addons again, since there should be no reason for them to not work in VRay Blender 2.79 if they work in normal Blender 2.79.

If I manage to reproduce the error messages I will upload a screenshot.

    Thanks in advance.

OK, Blender keeps on just crashing with no error messages when I try to enable PIE menus addon, so I started blender from Command line and here are screens of what appears when I open user prefs window and when I click to enable PIE Menus addon. The 2nd photo is just when blender starts, the first one is when I open User prefs window (a new line appears:

"fake_module: addon missing 'bl_info' gives bad performance!: 'C:\\Users\\Jeronimo\\AppData\\Roaming\\Blender Foundation\\Blender\\2.79\\scripts\\addons\\mifth. py'")

and the third one is when it crashes and the following shows up:

"pyrna_srna_ExternalType: incorrect subclassing of SRNA 'AddonPreferences'
    See bpy_types.py
    <Expected! > : Error: Unrecognized Exception"

    I hope this can help

IDK, but is maybe related (IIRC, 'V-Ray for Blender' is build from master) :

      hi,
Just a heads up about incoming addons breakages and api changes and new rules!

2.79 release is fairly safe from these changes.

A new change restricts the use of duplicate class names.
Put simple, if you use a duplicated class name your addon will fail activation.
This includes addons preferences and any other class name duplicates.
      BF task here: https://developer.blender.org/T52564

"the use of duplicate class names has been restricted, we plan to, after 2.79 release, to address these issues.
please note these issues will not be in 2.79 release but are in nightly builds.
it's good to be aware of this issue, i'm trying to keep addons repo clean for 2.79 release, then come in and fix all the issues in nightly, whilst not polluting addons master with fixes that might be conflicting with release."

      More information will follow.
source @ Blenderartists forum Thread: *** Addons Breakages 2.79 master (Nightly Builds)***

Also, Blender master (daily build) uses Python 3.6.2 VS official 2.79 release that uses Python 3.5.3 - sometimes this also means broken addons, should get in contact & report to developers (most of them are great and they often 'fix it' as soon as they are aware of an issue)

      Stay well

Thanks for that, seems interesting and looks very suspiciously related to my problem. Hopefully there will be a VRay blender 2.79 release where that issue is fixed too.

        Cheers!

Managed to reproduce the error message when I try to enable the Official UI PIE Menu addon. It's the same as when I try to enable the other 3rd party addons that won't work since VRay Blender went up to 2.79. If it has to do with not having unique class names in the script, why would it affect the Official UI PIE Menu addon (since it's official and should therefore have the registered class name for the addon)? Anyway, what ever the reason, I hope it gets fixed soon. The error message itself says it's a bug so.....

Strange thing, I can enable official Pie menu without any error messages and that addon works here.

Well I am installing the newest nightly every day now so I imagine that every time I install VRay Blender the addon is a new version that overrwrites or replaces the previous one, instead of some corrupt old one; and I still get the problem. I suppose the official addons get overwritten with each install.....I also looked for the newest versions of the other addons that give me problems and updated, but still no luck

Thanks anyway, I'll keep on trying

Days have gone by and several different nightly installs and I am having the same problems.

Today I tried eliminating my User/AppData/Roaming/BlenderFoundation/Blender/2.79 and, besides losing all my startup settings ofc, I was able to separately enable those addons that were making blender crash, but when I try to enable them all together with all the addons I intend to use, Blender crashes when I enable one or another. Sometimes it crashed when I enabled PIE Menu, other times it crashed when I enabled the VRay Blender addon, other times it crashed when I enable another addon....depending more or less on what I had enabled previously. It's just some addons make the others crash blender. This was not happening in the normal Blender 2.79, I was able to enable them all together, it only happens to me with the VRay Blender branch........

So I ended up more or less as I was before and I am currently using the best possible compromise, but it would be great to have some answer about this from a developer and know why I can use all my addons in normal 2.79 and why not in VRay Blender branch, or if there is some solution or it is being worked on....

                Thanks in advance

Please, write the exact list of addons that do not work for you.

Hi bdancer! I would love to but there is no exact list, because it changes all the time, if I can explain:

If I just enable one of them alone and leave the rest at default, each addon (separately) works, but then if I go enabling more addons, then at some point it crashes and it is not always the same addon that makes the crash. I tried several combinations and also starting to enable from the top of the list downwards, or from the bottom of the list upwards and each time a different addon makes blender crash when I enable it.

In this way, sometimes it seemed like the culprit was i.e. magic UV addon, but other times it looked like it was the Official PIE menu addon, other times it even happened when I enabled the vb35 addon. I don't know which exactly is guilty of making the others not work.

So currently what I am doing is not enableing PIE menu addon, nor magic UV, nor some addons I had like mira tools, milfth tools and some others, but I could also do a combination in which these are ok but then I cannot enable others. Yes, I know, it sounds crazy but this is what I spent 3 hours yesterday trying out.

I am attaching what I have in my C:..User\AppData\Roaming\BlenderFoundation\Blender \2.79 hoping it may help

                    https://www.dropbox.com/s/jqsjgi5zid4jm2w/2.79.rar?dl=0

You will see that I have no User prefs file since when I saved user prefs it seemed to be worse, so I have only the last Startup file I have reverted to and it seems that the addons I have enabled was stored there since it always loads the theme, hotkeys, addons, etc, that were active when I saved the Startup file. If you want me to start again and save a User Prefs file so you can look at it let me know.

                    Sorry for the mess

One month later I am still having the same problems with addons, just updated to latest nightly (24.01,201. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

                          Hey all,

Just wanted to say that finally everything is back to normal for me since I installed the latest Nightly from 01/03 (maybe it was already fixed in earlier builds already), so I can enable all the addons as before without VRay blender crashing, and I can also use the same startup file with normal Blender 2.79a; so thanks for the constant work from the dev team! I knew you would end up fixing it

Yep, Windows 10. My trouble happened right after the last update which for me was around December. I still have no idea what happened though, but luckily now it seems to be all good. Ar you still not able to get the grove to work? Good luck with that, it looks like an awesome addon.
