I'm using it, very straightforward to get good results. I recommend.
The only downside now is to have to ping-pong between 2.8 and 2.79 to use with V-Ray.

I would be curious to see how Scatter behaves for large, very large areas...
Is it effective with vray ?

Well....it's not a miracle solution. It automates all the process of creating a complex enviroment with just a few clicks, which is great.
It has nice presets, so even without knowledge, you can already achieve good results.

But at the end of the day is just the official blender particle system under the hood. So for large areas you will possibly face the same challenges as if you used the Blender standard particle system.
You could do all the magic manually (density by distance, curves booleans,...), but it'll take much more time.

Have in mind that Skatter is for Blender 2.8 (mainly to use with Cycles).......many of its advantages are lost when you need to go back to 2.79.
