  • Can't get Depth of Field to work. Help!

Depth of field just won't work. I'm using a V-Ray camera with DOF on and F-Stop to 2, as you can see on the attached C4D R21 file. What am I doing wrong?

DOF works fine, you just don't see the effect since the scene is quite large and you have the focus on an object 8m away from the camera.
Try to reduce the scene size and you will see that clearly:

BTW, DOF will work also on your scene, you just need to move the other objects farther away:

I wish CG will implement the DOF that RedShift has - in RedShift you can adjust the strength of the DOF without changing any other setting. Of course if you wish you can make it physicly correct, but to have the option to make it as strong as you wish, regrdless what F-stop you use is a great feature

If you Enable the global Depth of Field option from the Render Settings you can tweak the "Aperture" parameter and change the amount of DOF without the need to tweak F-stop or anything else. This applies for both V-Ray 5 and V-Ray 3.7

Hi 3dkobi , are you testing this in interactive or production? Changes on some options in render settings require restart of interactive - we will check if this is not one of them.

3dkobi the Global Depth of Field options apply only to regular cameras and not for the Physical Camera (sorry for not mentioning that)
For the Physical Camera you can control the DOF amount is controlled by the "Film Gate" parameter, no matter of the F-stop value and the other parameters.
However, currently changing the Film Gate also changes the FOV because of the connection between our Film Gate parameter and the same one in the Cinema 4D camera. We will look for a user-friendly solution and let the DOF amount being controlled only by the Film Gate.
