  • Light Material takes FOREVER to Render - alternative?

I'm trying to make a fire, so I have an object I made that looks like a flame. I want it to emit light but the only way to do. this seems to be through the light material but it significantly increases render time.

Is there another way for an object to be used as a light?

    Hey jami_stewart ,
can you post a screenshot of what you're trying to achieve? To me, using the light material for fire doesn't sound as a good approach, but until I see the scene it would be difficult to recommend something.

Absolutely! So I have my fire and I want the fire to emit light so that it lights my scene. There is no parameter for intensity in self illumination so that isn't working either.

The only way I have found to do this is to place a sphere light so it illuminates like a fire would but it doesn't look realistic. I want my entire fire object to glow and radiate light.

            Hey jami_stewart ,
sorry for the late replay. You can still go for the Sphere Light as your main light source for the fire and for the fire geometry you can use a V-Ray Material with combined Diffuse Color and Self-Illumination Color set to a desired yellow or orange colors closer to a fire. This setup should ease the render time a bit.

Here is an example on the screenshot below. I set the Sphere light to be purple on purpose, so you can see the effect and check if this works for you.
