  • Architectural Glass Sky reflections

    Hello,
I am still trying to figure out, how to achieve nice glass in VRAy 5 - somehow that the sky reflects blueish onto the glass - I tried various tutorials, but I don't get the results like in normal architectural rendering. The face normals are all in the right directions - does it also relate to the sun position? Or is this effect of refraction normally achieved in the post-process?
Any help, tips etc. are much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Unless you are looking for specific glass, use a simple glass shader, black diffuse, white reflection/refraction, IOR 1.5/6. It’s important to get double glazing for the windows.
Here you can see the results using this method: https://forums.chaosgroup.com/forum/...-classic-villa
You can also get a fake architectural glass in other ways if needed.

      HI,
thank you for the answer -- "It’s important to get double glazing for the windows." -> maybe that's the problem, will try it tomorrow.

        Dear Sirio,
thank you for the tip with double glazing - works better. Can you also please elaborate on the Sun and SKY settings for the villa project? Thank you in advance.

I always use default settings for sun and sky, the glass reflection may be affected by sun incidence and surrounding environment.
Don’t forget to perform tone mapping using VFB, you can start by lowering the highlight, adding a filmic tone mapping, and if needed a LUT.

            HI Sirio,
thank you again, works well... much better now. What kind of Cam settings do you use - the default settings the renderings are far too bright.

there is no such thing as a camera setting that works in every scene you tune the exposure depending on the light condition. For an average sunny exterior you can start with the ”sunny 16 rule” (ISO 100, F 16, SS 100), this is a good starting point.

Hi Sirio, great - will test it. Currently, I am adjusting colour and exposure - Exposure Value and White balance...
                always learning.

White balance is something that I prefer to do in post from the VFB, you can also tune the exposure from there but not too much, I would say +/-1 stop otherwise a raw image too dark or too bright may affect sampling.
If needed you also have auto white balance and auto exposure inside the override but since they do not work with the IPR they are not very useful.
