  • Help optimize render times for scene with HDRI and metal materials

I need some help optimizing render times for a scene I have. There are a lot of objects with metal materials, so there are a lot of time consuming glossy reflections.

It´s lit by a single dome light with an HDRI. I´ve turned on dim reflection distance on most of my materials to lower render times, and to not have those materials reflect a black color I also have an identical HDRI in the “over reflection slot” in the overrides. I´ve also reduced max reflection depth on many of the materials.

I´ve activated adaptive dome on the dome light. Diffuse, specular and reflection is enabled.

Bucket sampler, 1-24. Threshold 0.01. Blue note optimization enabled.

GI engine light cache, “use for glossy” rays enabled.

I don’t think I have much use of denoiser since there are a lot of fine texture detail I don’t want to get lost.

It actually seems my render times increased since I activated dim distance reflections, unless the increase was caused by something else.

Is there anything more I can do except reducing the dim distance and reflection depth more?

    Hello kimmo_hernborg,

You can check the following article, which contains some tips on optimizing your render settings to achieve good quality and faster render times. Please have a look at it and let us know if it helps.

You can also share the scene in question so we can have a look. Thanks.

Maybe you can try to lower the max AA sub to something like 18, depending on the scene it may work.

Thanks! I do however get a message that I´m not authorized to access the link you posted. I´m logged in with my chaos accout.

          Thanks! I´ll try that.

              That worked. Thanks!

In a scene with a lot of reflective metal objects which are reflecting each other, reducing dim distance and reflection bounces should be a big part of getting faster render times?

I´ll see if I can share a scene. How would I do that?

                Hello kimmo_hernborg,

You can upload the scene to a cloud service (such as Google Drive or WeTransfer) and send us a sharable link. Alternatively, you can open a support ticket via our contact form and attach the scene there. If you open a ticket, please make sure to send a link to this thread.

                  Hi Aleksandar

Thanks for your help. I have a couple of more questions regarding the scene you looked at.

I have used light cache with the default setting as my GI engine. In older versions of Vray brute force seemed to be more noisy. Would any changes to the GI settings result in a less noisy image? "Use for glossy rays" and "blue noise optimization" is enabled, and the dome light is set to adaptive.
Fine detail in the GI isn't as important as a less noisy and fast rendered image.
