  • Render mask doesn´t seem to work, content is added to next frame

I can´t get the render mask to work. I need to re-render a couple of objects in a sequence so I am using render mask. This always worked great in Vray for 3ds max. I don´t know if I´m missing something, but the feature seem to be broken in the C4D version.

When rendering a frame, all the previous rendered frames are added to the current frame. So in frame 1 I have one instance of the object, in frame 2 I have two versions (the second instance is offset due to the camera movement), in frame 3 I have three versions etc.

I´ve tried checking and unchecking the "render mask clear" option but that doesn´t help. I´ve tried rendering using both the Object mode and the Object ID mode.

I don´t know if it matters, but the objects I am rendering is a pipe with a glass like material, with two smaller pipes with transparent colored materials inside it.

    Vray v5.20.00. C4D R25.010.

    Hello kimmo_hernborg,

There is a known bug where the "Render Mask Clear" option doesn't clear the previous image from the VFB. It has already been reported to our developers (bug ID: VC4D-1147) for fixing. I will let you know once we have more information on the matter.

      Thanks for your answer.

Do you have any idea when this might be fixed? If its a bit in the future I might have to find another way to solve this.

I am afraid that I cannot provide any specific timeframe for this. I will additionally bump the priority of the issue and I will let you know as soon as we have any updates. Thank you for your understanding.

Just came here to ask the same question - facing a project and yet 3rd time in Vray history the mask clear does not work! Last time it was fixed overnight - can you please update NOW?

This is not something we can ignore it's something I constantly need for work and fluent workflow.

I came up with a work around which might help. First I rendered the objects I needed with the render mask. Then I applied a shadow catcher material on everything else, turned off GI, reflections, shadows etc to speed up rendering and used the alpha from those frames to mask to mask the data from the previous frames on my render-mask frames.

Hope this might be useful to you.

I agree with you that the clear mask frame is of critical importance, and I hope it gets sorted soon.

I´m sure there´s a reason for it, but when would you not want to use the "clear mask" option? This wasn´t even on option in older versions of Vray for 3ds max.

Not a personal issue for you Aleksandar, but this is simply laughable - This issue existed few times before and was fixed, now when users need it, Chaos can't even fix a simple thing. Finally was happy to use Render mask ID after more than a year with Vray 5, and I can't still

Well if did not work around that, I would be long time out of work I'm just simply using an alpha, or object ID filter, which renders along and then save multiple / animation alpha files in post-production. Important thing is to have a neutral background color which will not affect the alpha edges.

As you stated right on spot - why there would be even a need for not clearing the background ?
For those, who wonder - if you render multiple objects with render ID, the previous frames leave a mark on background, which affects the alpha and it appears on the edges of newly rendered frames:

The issue with the render mask not being cleared is now fixed and we're currently running internal tests. If they pass the fix will be available in the stable builds next week.

RwVision if you still experience the same issue after the fix, I'll have to check what is going on with your specific scene.
