  • Newbie Q: How Do I add displacement/normal maps?

    Hi

Apologies for how basic this is - I can't find an intuitive way to add in displacement and normal maps - the VRay Material does not seem to have any slots for them, only bump. Im assuming that I need to stack materials somehow?

I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si6gZ5MREZk and they have a VRay Displacement Material, but I can't find this in the R25 Vray 5 drop down.

    Any help appreciated!
    Thank you

Ok - I've added a standard material and used the displacement slot, and put the VRay material on top of this....assuming this is the right way?

    Not sure about normal maps...

For the displacement use the Vray geometry tag, the normal map can be added inside the Vray material in the bump slot using tangent mode.

        Hello pali_rao,

As this question is related to V-Ray for Cinema4D, I have moved the topic in the V-Ray for Cinema4D :: General section of the forum.

You can add V-Ray Displacement by adding a V-Ray Geometry tag. You can find more information about the workflow here.

The normal map needs to be added to the bump slot of the V-Ray material. You can find more information about that here. You can also find more info about the VRayNormalMap shader here.

Can someone tell me why i have to use linear mode for good normal-map effekt? Is this the only slot i have to use linear-mode or are there others like sss?

You would want to use a linear color profile for the normal map as shouldn't have any color corrections. It will use the color of the map to determine the surface's normal and color correcting the map might result in the incorrect rendering of the normal map.
