  • Advanced GI settings in Vray5

I tried a search and couldn't find anything, but is there a way to access the vray 5 advanced GI settings like we had in 3.7 or like 3ds max version? I am looking for a way to desaturate the GI, is this possible in the current build of vray5? And if not, is this feature on the roadmap? Thanks!

    Hello zAppledot,

Please note that these options are deprecated in all V-Ray integrations (will be removed from V-Ray for 3ds Max as well) and won't be reintroduced in V-Ray for Cinema4D. You can control the saturation of the GI in post-production directly in the VFB.

To do that, add the Back to Beaty render elements (you can drag the whole group as shown here). Once you render the image, the render elements will be composited automatically and you can add a Hue/Saturation layer to control the saturation of the pass. Please check this video.

I hope this is of help.

Good to know, and thanks for the tips. I do like that this method allows for even more control. However, since I am rendering many variations of objects(as pngs with alpha) in the render using c4d's takes system, it will be a bit of work to desaturate the GI with the vfb. I used to desaturate the GI so it wasn't influenced by the material colors in the scene which I know its not realistic, but it made the object variations look better when recomposed later on in a web app. That is unfortunate that they are deprecated, ah well.

You can add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to the GI layer directly in the VFB:

After adjusting it to what you like, save the Layer Tree file to your project folder and it should work across all your takes, and even work with "Render All/Marked Takes to PV...".
