  • Reducing Rendertime on transparency

    Hello guys,
I need some expert advise. I am currently working on a new art style for a pitch. We want to go for the Microsoft Tendril Look like this.

I kinda got to the point where I am happy, but those render times are just insane. My scene renders more than a hour on a FHD picture and still comes out pretty noise. I attached the material in a test scene.
Has someone tips to get those rendertimes down, or is that just impossible with such a look? We are using VRAY CPU at work, would the GPU renderer be faster?

    Thanks for your tips

I just did some quick test. I had to use my own HDRi so the light is different.
With your setup it took 6 min 40 sek to render 1280 x 720. With the other material and setup ti took 1 min 4 sek to render. Both are grainy but the noise limit is just 0.01.
I tried to use a more standard frosted glass with the refract thin walled active. I think you can get good results with that and much shorter render times.

Why don't you activate the denoiser? you will get clean image in a fraction of the time. Personally I prefer the Intel open image denoiser that is very effective on both noise and fireflies.
For the materials, those should have SSS on the inner body (I use a simple 2sided) and for the exterior shell a semitransparent plastic shader should be enough, your original setup seems more complicated than it should be.
Here is my attempt based on this reference: https://k.sina.cn/article_1773655610...027010le3.html on a modern system it should take no more than a couple minutes (you can find the HDR on polyhaven.com):

Thanks everyone, that really helped. I think I just went into autopilot mode without rethinking how I achieve certain effect.

sirio76 thanks for the tip with the 2sided Material, that is actually something I just didnt know works so well.

Got my rendertimes down in my actual scene by quiet a lot.
