You can do something like this by working with a curvature shader and a custom falloff, layered together on both alpha and self illumination channel:

Great Tutorial as always! I'm still a bit disappointed about the fact that vray doesn't understands the custom gradation curves and tangents... just linear interpolates between the points. I would really like to see that we have full control over the falloff curves and remap nodes. It's been in this half state for some time now. sorry for the rant
