  • Node materials preview refreshing very often

    Hello,

i've noticed that many Vray node-materials preview are refreshing when opening a C4D scene. They are also refrehing their preview when i save the scene (even when i did not modified them!). It's annoying because the scene become laggy each time materials refreshs,..

It's not the case for classis materials, their previews are well cached.

Possible that node-material previews behave like classis ones?

      Hi f2b
Could you provide a simple scene where this is happening and perhaps a video showcasing it? Also what is the exact version of CInema4D you are using? In general Cinema4D will ask for a preview and we will only render it. Apart from that we don't have much more control over the previews. Finally have you tried deleting or renaming your Cinema4D preferences directory(located in %appdata%/Maxon Cinema4D YYYY), since there's always the possibility that something could be wrong there.

I think has been an issue from the beginning as far back as the vray5 beta - assuming you are talking about the "material manager." Other issues you might have is materials never refreshing(grey) even if you "render materials" in the "materials" tab. Or lockup if you start working after opening a file, but before the mat previews are rendered. In my experience the more complex the file, the more nodes you have, the worse it gets. If you search the forum it is a persistent issue. I have dealt with it for the past year and it's just something I learned to live with. If you disable "Preview during interactive rendering" that helps bc i think it dumps the previews during ipr and you can work, then re-renders when you close so it forces re-render. It might also be a cinema issue with the nodespace. I will be watching this closely and for what the vray 7 beta looks like.

Thank you and also looking forward to any new info.

Hi All! Just want to confirm, that this is a regular issue for us too. The material preview in the material manager turn grey or black after a while even when just navigating the scene file. While the material manager re-renders the texture the preview for the materials on the objects in the viewport also changes to black, but the viewport stays black or unresponsive longer than the material manager previews. Unfortunately this behavior is quite unpredictable. sometimes the previews work really well, other times the slightest chage in the material parameters "crashes" - turn the material preview and the viewport preview black and it takes a while to come back.
