  • V-Ray 7 - Remove the "Visible to GI" option from the Object Properties tag

    Hi All!
First of all, this is a great exciting new release and i just started testing stuff out!
One thing i noticed in the release notes is the following:
    - Remove the "Visible to GI" option from the Object Properties tag

I was wondering, what was the reason behind removing this one switch from the new update?

In some cases it was handy to quickly remove and light spill or color cast from objects, without creating an override material, or creating more advanced include exclude setups.
The override material worked a bit differently and the gi was still present just with a different color, or adding a totaly black material to the gi.
If there is an easier way around this that im not aware please let me know.

    Hey akos_kiss,

Thank you for the kind words, let us know if you have any interesting findings.

The parameter in question was turned off in the V-Ray Core for all integrations a long time ago for V-Ray 5. It didn't work at all in our integration. This is the reason why when you used it with material override, the GI was always present.
We just removed the option to avoid confusing everybody with something that was turned off long ago.
In order to give you a workaround for your use case where the option was supposedly useful to you, please share a picture with the effect you described made with an older V-Ray version, so we can visually see what kind of effect you were having and try to assist in some way with a workaround.

      Hi shaio

Sorry i was totally mistaken! I was convinced hat this funciton was working and i used it multiple times in the past! I checked the project files and you are totally right! i used it in conjunction with "cast shadow" disabled mostly in direct lighting conditions and i totally misjudged what effect was required for removing the color cast!

So if i understand correctly the best way to go about this is to use a i.e.:diffuse black material in the gi override to remove color cast, or just use the same material that is receiving the color cast.
