It appears if you use the "remove unused materials" command from the material manager, it will remove all materials that are used in the blend material, unless they are assigned to objects themselves. This leaves the blend material empty. Can this be fixed?

Hello scott_canuel,
I apologize for the delayed reply.
Upon testing this on my end I was not able to reproduce this issue. Could you please share the exact versions of Cinema4D and V-Ray that you have installed? Also, sharing a short video recording of the issue and a test scene would be helpful as well. Thank you.Aleksandar Kasabov

aleksandar.kasabov In fact, I can reproduce this issue.
If you use a Blend Material and use the base material and another coat Material: The coat Material gets deleted when using "Delete unused Material"-Command. BUT the Base-Material will not get deleted.
Iam using R23 and one of the latest nightlies builds.
Update: Of course to prevent this from happening you can simply use a NULL-Object and assign the Coat- and Basematerials to it. Then they will stick. Also this trick works when using 2-Sided and you want to copy objects with 2sided Materials/Blendmaterials and their corresponding materials to other scenes. Then this trick works to prevent from deleting unused materials and to copy objects with those materials to other scenes.Last edited by PdZ; 27-04-2021, 07:38 AM.

Hello,
Could you please try to download the latest V-Ray 5 for Cinema 4D, hotfix 3 from here, and see if the issue persists? If you still experience it, please send us a short video recording of your screen, demonstrating the steps, needed to reproduce the issue. Thank you.Aleksandar Kasabov

Hi,
I flagged this in the beginning. I didn't get any responses. I had to re-texture my whole scene again when this first happened.
My work-around was stacking the materials under the Blend Material, then it thinks its assigned to a object. If you select 'Delete Unused Materials' it sticks.
Will we ever be able to stack materials again? Users have been asking for it to be brought back urgently/frustratingly since Vray 5 launch day...

I think material stacking is already available in the latest build.

Hello bern_diener,
As sirio76 already mentioned, we have added support for blending different materials with the texture tags and it is available in the latest hotfix 3 which you can download from here. You can also check this forum thread for more information about the improvements and bug fixes in this hotfix.Aleksandar Kasabov

I tested the Blending Materials with Tags. It seems to be specific to saved polygon selections only. It doesn't seem to be like the traditional stacking materials on a object. Not sure if I am missing something... Do you want a example file?

Dear bern_diener,
Keep in mind that you need to disable the texture tiling inside the Material tag whenever you want to add one material to another by using an alpha mask in the opacity slot of the V-Ray Material. Also, please note that there might be some differences between the viewport preview of the stacked materials and the final render. This has been discussed here. Please let me know if this helps.
If you still experience any issues, please provide us with a test scene and more details about your workflow. Thank you.Aleksandar Kasabov
