  • light + fog much brighter since update 5.2

    Hi Chaos-Team,
just wondering if the light (in combination with fog) is much bright since the Update 5.2.
Looks better, but differs a lot to the old version and brings problems with changing/re-rendering "old" projects.

    Hello klex167,

Could you please specify the exact versions of V-Ray that you are comparing, as well as the version of Cinema4D that you are using? Have you made any changes to the scene?

I created a very simple scene where I added a rectangle light with some directionality and V-Ray environment fog. I tested the official builds of V-Ray 5, V-Ray 5 update 1, V-Ray 5 update 1.4, and V-Ray 5 update 2. The results of all tests were the same. You can check the results from each version here:

    V-Ray 5, V-Ray 5 update 1, V-Ray 5 update 1.4, V-Ray 5 update 2

Do you experience those differences with this particular scene only or does it also happen with a simple test scene?

I have also attached my test scene. Could you render the scene with the different versions of V-Ray and see if you still experience those differences. Thank you.

        Hello Aleksandar,
I didn't change anything in the scene. Just updated and rendered the frame and it looked different.

So I have a simple test scene for you. I compared V5.10.24 from Nov 05 with V5.20.00 from Dec 17 . Both with Cinema R23.110. And the difference is obviously.

And thanks again for you testing. I rendered you scene with 5.1 and 5.2 and both results are the same. So may be the setup of my fog is creating those differences?
I'm looking forward to your testing with my scene.

          Hello klex167,

I had a look at your scene and I noticed that you have reduced the Diffuse Contribution and the Specular Contribution parameters in the Options tab of the Rectangle light. With the release of V-Ray 5, Update 2 we added an option to control the Light Volumetric Contribution separately. If you want to achieve the same result like the one, rendered with V-Ray 5.10.24, simply reduce the Atmospherics Contribution to 0.2. You can find more information about this parameter, alongside the other parameters of the Rectangle light here. You can also find more information about what is new in V-Ray 5, Update 2 here.

I hope this is of help.

That helps a lot. Thank you Aleksandar. I will take a deep look into the parameters.
Best wishes for Christmas - klex
