  • geometry tag forgets displacement texture

    Hi!

I've been having an issue with a geometry tag. When rendering animations and using displacement, on random frames the displacement disappears and the frame renders as if there was no displacement applied.
This is a really big issue with animations, because there are sometimes hundreds of frames missing displacement, and every time i have to re-render those frames.
In my file i used a subdivision surface generator but this issue happens with cloners and extrude objects also. These cases are a bit more tricky as with extrude objects we want to keep the asset or model as parametric as possible, and some cases the materials and the geometry tag goes on a null object that groups a bunch of thing together.

EDIT: The displacement tag when used on animated objects is bit unreliable. Sometimes it renders fine but other times we have constant "flickering" (ie.: one frame renders the displacement fine, but on the next is doesn't render). We use cloud rendering and they have the same issues.

You can download the c4d file and an mp4 file from this link.

    Hi akos_kiss ,

could you please try using the Geometry tag/displacement on the Subdivs surface itself and see if you still get an issue?
here is how it look on my side having the tag directly on the Subdivs surface

      Hi YunalZobu,

Thank you for taking the time to test! Sorry, i forgot to mention that I already tested with the geometry tag on the sds and then it worked fine. But You are right! The issue looks like is not limited to sds, but to generators, like cloners, extrude objects, sweeps and so on. We have a project that has a lot of nested procedural object that have displacement on them, and sometimes they render fine but in other scenes with similar setups they produce issues like these.

Here's a link to a new scene and an mp4 to demonstrate the issue with a cloner and an extrude object.
This file has a few setups setups:
      1. full parametric - with "nested/child objects" objects this has most of the issues
      2. full parametric with single object - sometimes works, sometimes not
      3. full parametric but with a connect object - this looks like it works fine. Connect object to the rescue, but this is still a workaround and doesn't work all the time
      4. cloner with single object - in the current setup it works
      5. cloner with null objects and single object - this works fine
Oh and when the displacement is bad it usually also crashes on the last frame.

LINK to the file and previews.

Any update regarding this issue? As far as i can tell the object tag work a bit better if on a generator, but We have a project where we have object tags on an extrude generator objects and the displacement is not rendered on every second frame. So we had to render every second frame separately.

          Hello akos_kiss

I would like to apologize for the delayed reply.

I have just tested the scene you have provided with all displacement setups. There wasn't a single frame in which the displacement didn't render properly. That said, It is possible that the issue can be reproduced with specific versions of Cinema 4D and V-Ray.

Can you please share which version of Cinema 4D and V-Ray you are using to reproduce the issue?

You can find the exact version of V-Ray at V-Ray dropdown > Help > About > Right click text and select the copy text option and paste the information here.

          Example: V-Ray 5 for Cinema 4D, Update 2.2 (v5.20.02 from Feb 21 2022)

From time to time I’ve experienced the same issue in the past, seem to be a random problem in my case.

              Hello valentin_leondiev

sorry for the delayed reply. We mostly have these issues when we are rendering animations. If we render frame by frame or just sinlge frame, this is a very rare problem. seemingly random.
We had issues with the displacement when we were using cloud rendering services. And they also couldn't find explanation for the errors.

              V-Ray 5 for Cinema 4D, Update 2.4 (v5.20.04 from Apr 26 2022)

I couldn't test it with the new build as we have a few compatibility issues for now.
