  • material issues converting 3.7 to 5 and HDRI scaling

    Hi at all,

this has already been discussed several times here in the community and I supposed, all convertings problems were solved with the latest 2.5 (2.3) version of VR 5 C4D...?

I use some Evermotion models and on some, there are still problems remaining, especially with 3.7 two-sided mats. Is there any solution for this?

Free sample scene can be downloaded with the attached link.

Another point is, is there any posssibility, to scale and align HDRIs in a dome light? This had been asked for so many times, and I wonder why there is no way to solve this.

Thanks if anyone could give an advice

    Dear jrgen_halmer,

    Apologies for the delayed reply.

Upon checking the scene I can see that the issue is not in the 2-sided materials but in the opacity maps, used for the standard materials. Please note that the converter has some limitations and one of them is that the opacity source is forced to Color and Opacity mode to Stochastic. Grayscale values are converted to color. You can find more information about the current limitations of the converter here.

Another point is, is there any posssibility, to scale and align HDRIs in a dome light? This had been asked for so many times, and I wonder why there is no way to solve this.
Could you please elaborate some more on that? Would you mind sharing some examples of what are you trying to achieve? Thank you.

      Hello Aleksandar,

thanks for your reply - you don`t have to apologize, I`m a patient person...

Ok, so the converter doesn`t solve all kinds of issues at the moment - is it planned, to develop it further and all old scenes can be correctly coverted in future?

Regarding the HDRI Question: Normally this doesn`t tangent me at all, since I change the background in post if it doesn`t fit. But in a scene like the attached sample (1), the water reflections of the shore and the bulding should ideally fit.

But I tried some things myself again, an I found what I was looking for, In the light dome tab (3), the size and alignment of the whole dome can be adjusted. The background then fits. (2)

        Hello jrgen_halmer,

There are a few reasons why the converter only works partially. Keep in mind that V-Ray 5 has been completely rewritten from scratch and many of its features work differently than V-Ray 3.7.

Additionally, there are some features in V-Ray 3.7 that have not yet been implemented in V-Ray 5 and therefore those cannot be converted.

The tool will convert more of the elements from V-Ray 3.7 in the future, but it is important to understand that V-Ray 5 is completely new and rewritten and not everything from your old scenes will be convertible.

Regarding the HDRI Question: Normally this doesn`t tangent me at all, since I change the background in post if it doesn`t fit. But in a scene like the attached sample (1), the water reflections of the shore and the bulding should ideally fit.
Please note that currently, the dome light is infinite which means that you won't be able to scale it properly (if scaling on all 3 axes). It is on our to-do list to add a finite dome light that will allow you to better control the placement of the HDRI. Until then, as a workaround, you can set the dome light to invisible, create a sphere (scale it up so your scene is inside the sphere), add a V-Ray material with the HDRI to it and disable the Cast Shadows option (you will need to add a VRayObjectProperties tag to the sphere). I hope this is of help.

          Hello Aleksandar,

both sounds good...if it won`t be possible to convert all old scnes properly, thats a thing, I can live with.

Regarding the HDRI Topic, I have already been trying diverse workaraounds, with a seperate Sphere I had heavy noise problems. May be I did something wrong, I`m going to test this again...

I do not have often Scenes, were I need correct reflections, for this time, I´ve solved it with a screen behind the scene and a background-image with an alpha-map.

            Hello jrgen_halmer,

I am glad to hear that you managed to find a good workaround. As per the finite dome light, I will let you know as soon as we have any updates on the matter. Thank you.
