  • WTF steppings in displacement

Going crazy with steppings in displacement rendering. New C4D R26, latest Vray5 version installed, normal displacement , 16bits displacement map from Zbrush . Cuda rendering. Always worked for years . And now such a headache, how is it possible? ?? the displacement map is smooth. So
why does the rendering create shitty steps? is there a new parameter to check or uncheck in latest Vray5 version?? SO tired of that kind of problems!

to me it looks like the map is being clipped at a low value. I would set the min max bound clipping to be -1/1 and if its a 16 bit tiff you have to know the max displace and displace offset value in order to get the proper height. Alternatively I would suggest using 32 bit half float tif and leaving displacement value at 0/1. You do need to enable negative values in the bitmap and set the min and max bounds clipping.

Thanks for those ideas Dmitry, I use 16bits displacement maps to combine them with XYZtextures and I create that kind of renders since years

So for me or Covid19 turned me dumb or there is a problem in how the map is treated. I tried checking "use bounds" but the render presents the same problems of stepping

        Hello skulldoestalkfast,

Could you please send us the test scene with the displacement map (go to File> Save Project with Assets)? Also, please specify the exact versions of V-Ray and Cinema4D that you are using. Thank you.

I said to myself wait a minut maybe its a problem of Zbrush exporting a bad 16bits map. So I painted some features by hand in photoshop. Same stepping effect. ... headache in mid of a production . great.

a noise in the texture field seems to work OK without stepping.... Something went wrong with the 16bits displacement

and result using a map extracted from the displacement tab in Zbrush, not using the multimap exporter

This is a test with a map created in photoshop, 50GREY, and brushes strokes. Same Problem of stepping. rendered in CUDA, RTX or Vray and the problem remains

                        Hello skulldoestalkfast,

Upon checking your scene I can see that you are using a .psd file inside the displacement texture slot and this is the reason for this issue. Please note that .psd files are not fully supported by V-Ray due to compatibility and interoperability reasons. In order to get a smooth displacement, you will need to use a 16 or 32 bit float file, such as .tif or .exr files.

It works! So Zbrush exports a 16bits psd , there is no other choice. I used this workpipeline for years.... Now I understand I have to transform the maps into Tiff format. That's new no? Or maybe Covid19 killed me some neurons ?

Thanks for resolving my problem. That post can be closed.

Um, but ZBrush exports 16bit tiffs just fine, so you can easily get them directly
